Ontario Disability Lawyers Who Understand How Insurers Defend Claims

Last updated July 2026

We understand how disability insurers assess, deny and defend claims—because our founder represented them. Today, our team uses that insider perspective to help people challenge denied or terminated disability benefits.

Ontario Long-Term Disability Lawyers represents claimants across Ontario in disputes involving short-term disability, group long-term disability and privately purchased individual disability-insurance policies. We review the policy, medical and occupational evidence, insurer reasoning and procedural history to identify the strongest available path forward.

Our intake team will call you within one business day. No fee unless we recover compensation for you. Our fee is up to 33% of the amount recovered, confirmed in writing before we begin work. Virtual consultations across Ontario.

Why our insurer-side experience matters

Before representing claimants, founder Matthew Gordon represented Canada’s largest insurance companies in life, disability, property and other insurance cases. That work included medical evidence, policy interpretation, entitlement disputes and litigation strategy. That experience provides an insider perspective into how insurers assess, deny and defend disability claims.

That experience can help the legal team assess not only why a claim was denied, but how the insurer may attempt to defend that decision. It can inform how the team identifies weaknesses in the insurer’s reasoning, evaluates which evidence is likely to matter, distinguishes medical diagnosis from functional impairment, analyzes the policy definition rather than relying on the insurer’s summary, anticipates procedural and litigation issues, and decides whether early resolution, an appeal or litigation is appropriate.

How we review disability claims

  1. A visitor submits a free case-review form or calls the firm.
  2. The intake team makes first contact by phone within one business day. The initial free call is primarily used to schedule a later consultation.
  3. A separate free consultation may then gather more information about the claim.
  4. A lawyer reviews every potential matter before the firm decides whether it can offer representation.
  5. If the matter is accepted, the firm provides the applicable written retainer agreement, contingency-fee agreement, or both for review and signature.
  6. Representation begins only after the firm accepts the matter and the required written agreement is signed. The legal team then determines next steps, which may involve additional evidence, insurer correspondence, an appeal, negotiation or litigation.

We look for opportunities to resolve disputes efficiently, while preparing each matter with the possibility of litigation in mind.

Clients receive direct, practical advice about denied or terminated benefits, insurer appeals and disability lawsuits.

Submitting a form or participating in an initial consultation does not itself create a solicitor-client relationship. The firm must first accept the matter, and the applicable written agreement must be signed.

Practical advice, early resolution where possible, litigation where necessary

A disability dispute should not be reduced to a generic appeal package. The legal team reviews the policy, the claimant’s actual duties and limitations, the medical and functional evidence, and the insurer’s stated reasons. Where resolution is possible, the firm looks for an efficient path forward. Where litigation is required, the matter is prepared with that possibility in mind from the outset.

The firm reviews the actual policy, examines medical, functional, occupational and financial evidence where relevant, and tests the insurer’s reasoning. Early resolution is considered where appropriate. Appeals and lawsuits are advised based on the individual circumstances — not every matter proceeds to litigation, and not every matter can be resolved early.
